When you pick up full cylinders from your supplier (considered the shipper), your supplier must properly mark and label cylinders in strict accordance with DOT regulations. There are two transportation scenarios: picking up cylinders from the supplier and picking up cylinders from your own warehouse. The required communication is accomplished through the use of proper labeling and marking of the Hazmat container, use of a proper shipping paper, and placarding (when required). Like your compressed gas supplier, you too have a legal responsibility to “communicate the hazard” when transporting cylinders. Customer Hazmat Responsibilities When Transporting Hazardous MaterialsĮssentially all compressed gases, hereinafter referred to as “cylinders,” have been defined as hazardous materials by the U.S.
